Excerpts
Unit 2.3 Use Your Own Words
Your presentation will be more interesting for participants, and you will be more confident if you know the salient points well enough to be able to express them with your own unique style.
Remember you can be funny, but you are not a comedian. You can be entertaining, but you are not an entertainer. Know your audience, if your level of language is higher than your learners’ levels, then you will have to consider what words you will use and the speech rate at which you will present when teaching in a (1st, 2nd, 3rd) language or subject material that has a high degree of difficulty when trying to explain or understand it.
Decide how much time to spend on each talking point considering the degree of difficulty in terms of language, explanation time and importance of the talking point. Is it part of a learning objective? etc. Advanced students might understand what you are trying to explain the first time, you might want to involve those students so that you don’t come off as repeating yourself all the time to less advanced students.
Peer to peer learning is a very important part of the learning process. Peers explaining important information to less advanced peers in their first language is acceptable as learning is taking place.
Find your own style, draw from people who inspire you, know your content, know your audience, be natural, be energetic and authentic.
You are a big part of your student or trainee’s day, make it count.
Unit 10.4 Create an Online Presence
There’s no way around it, if you go out on your own, the rewards can be amazing, but you need to work somewhat harder than if you had an employer. You need a marketing plan and a sales plan.
Unit 11.2 Know Yourself and Your Children
In this case the stakes are higher as this might affect your relationship with your children and partner. There is a big difference between helping your children do their homework and teaching them for 4 to 6 hours a day.
Unit 12.5 Plan and Organize the Training (Deliver the Training)
Will you have guest speakers or specialists from particular departments or executive management come and address the trainees at some point? Is it in your training schedule? Has the length of time been agreed upon? Be careful of time hijackers that use your training platform to further their departmental agendas as you so conveniently got everyone together in one room for them.
Unit 13.The ESL (English as Second Language) Option
The ESL market is vast and spans across many countries that each offer opportunities and question marks regarding how you could or would integrate into them from a language, race, religion, nationality and cultural perspective amongst many other variables such as living arrangements, transport, vacation time, flights, pay scale, hidden costs, diet, healthcare, travel opportunities, historical points of interest, family visas, weather patterns and cost of living etc.
The culture shock can be overwhelming for some educators, the difference in language, eating different foods, experiencing different attitudes as a foreigner in a foreign country, just using the transport system or communicating the most basic information could be frustrating, feeling like an outsider or even alienated are life changing experiences that will test your character and your ability to adapt to your new environment.
I hope you enjoy this book.
